Effect of Application Time of Maleic Hydrazide on Growth and Chemical Constituents of Garlic Plants

Abstract
Foliar applications of malefic hydrazide (2000ppm ), at several different growth stages of garlic was made to investigate the inhibiting effects on plant growth, bulb development and contents of minerals and nucleic acids. in bulbs.
Maleic hydrazide (MH) treatments resulted in retarded leaf growth, and also failed in bulb development and seedstalk elongation. The bulblets formation was completely blocked by MH application. The inhibitory action of MH is more emphasized by the application in the early stage of growth than by that in the late.
MH did not affect the total amounts of N, P, Ca and Mg in leaf blades and cloves, but percentage of mineral contents was gradually decreased with senescence.
The contents of nucleic acids in cloves were reduced by MH application.
